Foldamers,
Structures
& Functions

Foldamers are synthetic oligomeric molecules that have a propensity to adopt folded conformations inspired by the folded structures of biopolymers. Interest for foldamers stems from the observation that the extraordinary functions of nucleic acids and proteins rest on their folded structures, and from the perspective that non-natural backbones may give access to structures and functions beyond the reach of biopolymers. The field of foldamer is multidisciplinary and has developed at the frontiers of molecular design, synthetic chemistry, structural chemistry and biology, biomimetism and synthetic biology.
